A Student’s View
I was studying Business and Management as part of my International Baccalaureate qualification, when I heard about Young Enterprise I immediately knew I wanted to be part of it. Not only would it aid my learning but it was also a way to meet new people, and learn new skills that would prove to be vital to my admission into Medical School. It was also going to look good on my CV.
I joined the Young Enterprise team at Filsham Valley School, where I opted to become the finance director. I had no experience of finances and so I found the challenge extremely appealing. After one part of the program I got talking to the judges, who complemented me on my good work. One of the judges; Nigel Bishop, a local bank manager for HSBC, mentioned that he would love to offer me a job at the bank. I thought he was joking, but decided to follow it up anyway. The next thing I knew I was an employee in the bank.
When I applied to university I knew I wanted to become a doctor, and went for several interviews for my place at Medical School. In all of my university interviews I was asked about working in a team and my ability to take on responsibility – Young Enterprise had given me perfect answers to all of these types of questions. Four years later I am still working part time with HSBC, which now funds my further education. The experiences I gained and knowledge I learnt while on a Young Enterprise team were extremely valuable and I would recommend to anyone to become part of a team.
