Choosing a Product
How do we select a particular product or service to sell in our business?
This can be quite difficult and the best way to start is to get the team to "brainstorm" some ideas at an initial meeting. However, it might be useful to look at last year’s (2006) national winners to get a feel for the type of products or services which have proved to be practical.
Tretherras School, Newquay won the 2007 national title with a product called "Muffin Wax" which is used on surfboards to enhance their performance. This obviously had very strong local appeal. Other finalists included themed calendars, handmade soaps, greetings cards, a storybook and CD, an advertising directory, mobile phone charms and handmade time pieces.
Because of the format of the Christmas Trade Fair in Priory Meadow, which is an important part of the marketing and sales for the business, most schools tend to produce "Products" rather than "Services". The problem with providing services - such as house cleaning or dog walking etc - is that they are difficult to represent at the Christmas Trade Fair, although some schools in the past have opted to sell product at the Fair, unrelated to the main service they provide.
